Biography

Dr. Krishna Iyer is one of the best paediatric cardiac surgeons in India.

He is among India’s most veteran pediatric cardiac surgeons and currently holds the position of Chairman and Head of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery. He is renowned for his clinical acumen and his extensive involvement in delivering pediatric cardiac care in India and other developing nations.

He was the first surgeon in India to successfully complete a quick two-stage arterial switch and double-switch procedure.

Dr. Krishna Iyer has operated on more than 10,000 babies, children and adults with congenital heart diseases comprising various procedures like arterial switch procedure, double switch operation TAPVC repairs, Fontan and Fontan type procedures, corrections for tetralogy of Fallot, DORV, Truncus etc. Senning operation, conduit repairs, a wide range of one-stage, and multi-stage corrections for complex congenital heart diseases.

He launched the first specialised programme for paediatric cardiac treatment in North India at Fortis-Escorts Heart Institute in 1995.

This paediatric cardiac initiative, which he oversaw, has elevated the standard of paediatric cardiac treatment across India and its South East Asian neighbours. More than 14,000 congenital heart disease patients from all across India and more than 15 other countries have had surgery thanks to Dr. Iyer.

He joined the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at AIIMS, New Delhi as Additional Professor, after completing his paediatric and infant cardiac surgery training under the guidance of the renowned paediatric cardiac surgeon Dr. R.B.B.Mee as Senior Fellow at the Department of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne in Australia in 1989

He frequently travels to places across India and internationally to give talks and has more than a hundred research articles in national and international journals.

He served as the founding president of three organisations: the Society of Paediatric and Congenital Heart Surgeons, the Asia-Pacific Paediatric Cardiac Society, and the Paediatric Cardiac Society of India.

Chosen on merit amongst the worldwide applicants to attend a workshop on 'Basic aspects of Cardiac Surgery' organized by the International School of Medical Sciences, Ettore Majorana, in Erice, Italy in March, 1983.

Has been recommended for honours at the M.Ch. Examination in Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery held on Dec. 1984.

Awarded the Doppler award for best paper at the Sixth International Symposium on Echocardiography in Cardiac Surgery, held in Washington D.C. on Nov.1994.

Awarded a Citation and Certificate of Appreciation for notable service and excellent contribution to EHIRC Dr A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, Honourable President of India on December 13th, 2002, New Delhi, India.
